Swelling or itchiness after a bug bite is a familiar feeling we have all experienced at some point in our life, whether we like it or not. Swelling is a normal response of our body’s immune system to an insect’s venom or saliva. Different types of bugs can cause swelling, redness, and itchiness, and can vary in severity. Below are some of the most common insects that will cause a swelling reaction.
As you may have guessed, mosquitoes are at the top of our list. Mosquito bites are notorious for swelling and itching. Female mosquitoes rely on blood as their primary source of food and nutrition. Female mosquitoes will pierce the skin to access a blood vessel between animals and humans. While the mosquito extracts blood, it injects saliva back into the skin. This saliva contains anticoagulants to help prevent blood clotting so the insect can feed, which causes itching and swelling.
Bedbugs are another insect that will cause swelling, redness, and itching. Like female mosquitoes, bed bugs feed on human blood and inject saliva as they bite. Human bodies react the same way, triggering an immune system response. Bedbugs will bite on any body part that is exposed while you sleep. Common areas on the body include the arms, legs, and the back of the neck.
Another bug that is known for swelling is bees and wasps. Bees and wasp stings will cause immediate swelling and pain. Instead of injecting saliva, these insects will inject venom into the skin. Some individuals may have a more severe reaction to these chemicals that will cause more than severe swelling and redness.
Ant bites, particularly fire ants, will lead to painful swelling and pus-filled blisters. These blisters often look like pimples and will be found in clusters on the body. Fire ants leave this distinct mark that generally starts to form only twenty minutes after the bite.
Lastly, ticks will cause swelling, especially if the tick remains attached to the skin for an extended time. Similar to mosquitoes, ticks can transmit diseases due to the blood they carry.
Most bug bites will only cause mild swelling and irritation. It is important to note that some individuals will experience a more severe reaction due to an allergic reaction. If this is the case, seek medical attention.
To avoid bug bites, the best thing you can do is to wear protective clothing that covers all areas of exposed skin, use an insect-repellent spray, and keep windows and doors closed to prevent bugs from entering the home. These methods will help minimize the risk of bug bites outside or inside your home.
