People come to Steel Lake for a variety of different activities. The Steel Lake area is much more than merely a lake, it includes a large park and an extensive play area known as “Family Funland.” Here is what you need to know about the main attractions of Steel Lake:
Steel Lake Park
Steel Lake Park, including Family Funland, is around 52 acres. From horseshoes and a gigantic wooden play set to a boat launch, a skateboard park and picnic shelters, this large Federal Way Park has something for everyone. If you are looking for an open space to enjoy the sunshine of a Washington summer day, Steel Lake Park offers everything you need to relax this summer. The park also includes a concessions area with a public restroom.
Family Funland
Many people know about Steel Lake Park solely because of its Family Funland attraction. Family Funland provides fun for all children, kids of all ages, including children with disabilities. The funland is home to the first AbilityWhirl in the United States. The AbilityWhirl is a roundabout for children in wheelchairs, allowing them to ride in their wheelchairs with their attendants. The inclusion of ability-friendly play equipment makes this park a gem of Federal Way and a step forward in terms of inclusion. The AbilityWhirl isn’t the only ability-friendly item featured, Family Funland also includes braille play panels and other play equipment making the park a more inclusive place for the mobility-impaired and disabled.
The play structure was built in 1994, by community members and volunteers looking to make the lake a better place for the community. However, the park was renovated in 2013 to include the disability accessible play items you see today.
Steel Lake Fishing
Steel Lake itself makes up just over 46 acres in water. The lake draws fishers from all around the Seattle area to Federal Way WA for trout and bass fishing every spring. This is a great fishing spot from early spring until October, when the season ends.
Each spring, Washington State Game officials stock Steel Lake with rainbow trout. Trout fishing opens on the fourth Saturday of April; the best time to go is right after the opening and throughout the month of May. If bass fishing is more of what you’re looking for, the best time to go bass fishing is usually when the trout season begins to decline.
There isn’t a lifeguard on duty at Steel Lake, so make sure to be safe and exercise caution as you enjoy the water.
All in all, come visit Steel Lake Park in Federal Way Washington! You will love the peace of nature, the inclusive playground, and the convenience of bathrooms available right in the park. While in Federal Way, make sure to check out Town Square Park as well.
