Keeping Your Trash Can Pest Free

Bugs and pests are commonly attracted to odors that originate from trash cans. Pests can detect when the trash is not tightly sealed and will find ways to get in. When keeping your trash can clean, you can prevent bugs from laying eggs and other pests from entering and sorting through your trash.

If you find yourself having a problem with larger pests such as raccoons or rats, you may consider installing motion-sensored lights. Raccoons and rats are frightened by sudden movements and bright lights. When a bright light exposes them, they will often run away and leave your trash alone. If you find raccoons and rats continually rummaging through your trash, you can consider investing in a heavy-duty trash can or something strong enough to withhold a raccoon from knocking the trash over. People who have continuous problems can try placing the garbage in a more secured and guarded location, such as a garage or shed.

The best way to keep bugs away from your trash is to keep your food waste sealed in a separate bag. It may seem redundant to place waste into a separate bag but by keeping your food sealed, it makes it harder for the bugs to access and detect it. If you find eggs, nests, or maggots in or surrounding your trash can, consider power-washing the inside. This will help clean any residue from previous spills or leftover crumbs from food waste. You can also try cleaning your trash can with dish soap or vinegar. This will help reduce the odor coming from your trash can and give you a fresh, clean start.

It is important to note what specific bugs you see around your trash can. There are unique treatments for various bugs that will work more effectively. The more specific you are with the bug problem the more specific your solution will be. Bugs will always need a point of entryway. If you notice larger bugs, such as cockroaches, search the trash can for any holes or entryways large enough for them to enter. If you come across any potential entryway, find a way to seal or patch it.  If all else fails, you can always try spraying the bottom and walls of your trash can with bug repellent.

Ultimately, keep your trash lids closed at all times. This will be the best and most efficient way to keep pests out of your trash. By taking these precautions, you can ensure that your trash will be pest and bug-free.
