Ways to Prevent Mosquito Bites this Fourth of July

Fireworks, freedom, hot dogs, soda and family. The Fourth of July is full of fun festivities. However, they aren’t so fun when you wake up the next day with your body covered in mosquito bites. Here are some ways to prevent getting bitten by this bothersome insect this Fourth of July.

DEET

If you plan to be outside for the fourth, make sure to use mosquito repellent. There are many type of mosquito repellent, but the one that is proven to work best contains DEET in it. It will say on the bottle if it contains DEET and how much it contains. For children or people who don’t seem to get bitten as much, you should use a lower concentration of DEET. Adults who get bitten more than usual should use a higher concentration of DEET. This product can be found at most grocery stores.

Avon Skin So Soft Bath Oil

For people who want to avoid chemicals, this product is the one for you. In 2015, researchers at New Mexico State confirmed that Avon’s Skin So Soft does repel mosquitoes. However, something to note is that the product only repels for about two hours, so it is important to reapply quite often. This product can be found online from Walmart, Amazon or Avon.

Lemon Eucalyptus

Another chemically synthesized product like DEET, the oil of lemon eucalyptus is very effective. However, it can only be used on kids 3 and up. If you have used DEET before and it hasn’t worked as well for you, lemon eucalyptus may be a great alternative for you. It’s just as effective, but has different ingredients. You can find lemon eucalyptus insect repellent spray at Target or Walmart.

Cover up and treat clothing!

If you have noticed that mosquitoes seem to like you more than normal, you can always try wearing clothes that cover up more skin. Long sleeves, long pants and tennis shoes will ensure the best protection on top of on of the tips above. Or you could also treat your clothing with permethrin. Permethrin is an insecticide that kills or repels mosquitoes. If you spray it on your clothing, make sure not to get it on your skin. It should strictly be on clothing only, but it proves very effective.
