Natural Methods for Deterring Spiders Away From Your Home

When it comes to controlling spiders from entering your home using natural methods, it is essential to create an environment that is less attractive to them. There are some strategies that homeowners can consider to help decrease the chances of spiders entering and staying inside your home.

It is most important to keep your home clean. Spiders are attracted to places that keep them hidden and provide a consistent food source. Spiders primarily eat other insects and will only stay in areas where insects are present. If there are spiders in your home, chances are that other bugs are nearby. By regularly cleaning your home, such as vacuuming, dusting, and sweeping, you can prevent other bugs from lingering.

Because spiders tend to hide, it is vital to declutter your home to eliminate potential hiding spots. Keeping your home clean and organized limits spiders’ options for instilling webbing. If you have places that are naturally cluttered such as cabinets, bookshelves, pantries, or other areas that store items, consider dusting them and reorganizing them often.

Another essential way to keep spiders and other bugs out of your home is by sealing any cracks or gaps. Perform a thorough inspection of the exterior and interior of your house. Look especially closely at the home’s foundation, floorboards, and corners. Use materials such as caulk or weatherstripping to seal these places tightly. It is also helpful to inspect windows, doors, and screens and ensure everything is intact and properly secured.

Spiders are known to dislike certain smells that you can strategically place throughout the home. These smells include cinnamon sticks, citrus, and essential oils such as peppermint, eucalyptus, and lavender. Dilute a few drops of essential oil in water and vinegar and spray the solutions around any potential entry points or areas where spiders are commonly found. You can also use a cotton ball to absorb some essential oil drops to place behind picture frames, bookshelves, or inside your trash can. Cinnamon sticks can also be placed behind picture frames, mirrors, on top of cabinets, inside pantries, or any other area that may attract spiders.

Lastly, there are things you can do outside to prevent spiders from entering your home. Consider trimming vegetation away from the home. This can help prevent spiders from creating habitats within plants, shrubs, and trees. It can also benefit your home by regularly removing spider webs from around your home. When a spider’s web is destroyed, they usually find another place to hide and create their new webbing. It can also be beneficial to limit the use of outdoor lighting. Many insects are attracted to lights, which, in turn, attracts spiders looking for food. Consider using yellow or LED lights that are less incentivizing to insects.
