Interesting Facts About Pest Control

Pest control has been around for many centuries as pests have always been an annoyance and even a danger to humans’ food sources and well-being. History has taught us that cats were used to control rodents by ancient Egyptians, while the ancient Greeks used predatory insects to protect their crops. These ancient civilizations primarily used what is known as biological control. This is when natural predators are used to control pests in the area. For example, ladybugs are known to eat up to fifty aphids every day. Aphids are known to suck fluid out of plants and infestations can cause these plants to die. Ladybugs are often introduced to an area with an aphid infestation, utilizing biological pest control.

Pest control and public health go hand in hand. Pest control plays a crucial role when it comes to preventing diseases carried by pests. A notorious pandemic in history that killed millions of people was the Black Death or Black Plague. This plague was caused by rodents which carried a disease known as Yersinia pestis. Because the living conditions were often dirty and cramped, humans lived in close proximity to rats and other rodents and were quickly exposed to this disease. Another example of a disease that comes from pests is the West Nile Virus, originating from mosquitoes. This disease was first discovered in a woman living in the West Nile district of Uganda in 1937. Throughout the years, this disease has continued to pass as mosquitoes transmit blood between animals and humans.

When comparing a home that is located in the forest to a home located in the city, it may be obvious which home naturally comes with more pests. However, pest control is not limited to rural areas only. Many urban areas struggle with many pest challenges. Urban areas often create more trash than rural areas. Trash will always attract pests such as rodents, cockroaches, flies, and ants. Other pests that urban areas are affected by include bed bugs and termites. By implementing pest control in these urban areas, infestations can be prevented in commercial and residential spaces.

Pest control is essential when it comes to infestations of unwanted pests. Pest control is constantly evolving with ongoing research. Over the years, scientists have discovered more effective and efficient solutions when it comes to pests. While more research takes place and developments on solutions occur, pest control industries stay up to date with recently released technologies and advancements.
