A perfect afternoon with a family or couple can be spent in the Dallas City Park. At over 300 acres, this the largest park in Dallas and is a hub for community activities and for families with young children. There are 3 separate playgrounds scattered throughout the park. Some have modern equipment, while others are older, with the classic metal merry-go-rounds that continue to make children sick, while laughing.
If you decide to follow the trail that goes through the park, you will eventually end up at the Japanese Garden. There, you will find beautiful, traditional plants, such as bonsai trees, pools of water and rock arrangements. The flowers that can be found there are breathtaking, it is the perfect place to meander through and relax after a long day. A botanical garden can also be found. Unlike the Japanese Garden, the Botanical Garden has a soft, rather than cement pathway. Visitors can enjoy the various flowers and other greenery in this area.
While enjoying the trails that run through the park, you will also encounter the Rickreall Creek. This runs through the central portion of the park and there are many places that are gentle where children and dogs can play in the water. If you are looking for them you may even find some crawdads lurking under rocks. There are a few different bridges located along the creek. One of them is a large suspension bridge.
This park is a great area to gather with family and friends. There are a few different covered shelter areas with picnic tables. There are a few grilling areas located in the shelter areas. Other uncovered picnic tables are located throughout the park. Many of these picnic areas and all of the covered shelters are located near playground structures. Making them excellent areas for families to set up for lunch as children play.
Large grassy areas provide great areas for children to run around and for group games and activities. There are also basketball courts where you can usually find an active game going on, or someone just shooting hoops. There are also BBQ pits that visitors can enjoy. There is also an 18-hole disc golf course that patrons enjoy.
If this park sounds enjoyable, you may want to try out these other locations that are nearby. Baskett Slough is a National Preserve just outside of Dallas. This is a great place for hiking and bird watching. Farther away in Salem you will find the Deepwood Museum and Gardens. This is a beautiful area with a historical house and surrounding gardens for visitors to enjoy.
