A Day in the Life of A Route Manager – Joshua Knutson

Pest control tech

Written by Joshua Knutson

The day to day life of a route manager for Insight Pest Solutions can be very boring to be honest. Logistically if you look at it, you repeat the same phrase over and over again, deal with the same questions, and the same doors getting slammed in your face. However, every so often there is a golden nugget in the day, the occasional kind person, or sale, which makes the day worth it. There are times, people, experiences when you find these precious gems of opportunities that make the entire job worth it.

One of these experiences happened to me when I knocked on a door and repeated the same pitch that I had rehearsed for months every day, hundreds of times. As this elderly gentleman opened the door, he stared blankly at me and l realized he wasn’t entirely paying attention to what I was saying, so I stopped and asked what was wrong. He explained to me that his wife had just passed away that morning, and they were waiting for the funeral home to arrive with the hearse to take her away. I apologized and continued to inform him that I was servicing the neighbor in about an hour, and I explained that if I need to move the truck or change the appointment I would for his convenience. After explaining this, I turned to be on my way and he asked me, “What are you doing?” I responded that I was just treating for spiders and that we wouldn’t take more than an hour. He asked me another question, “how much are you doing that for?” He then followed with “My daughter and I were bitten by a brown recluse recently and had to get rushed to the hospital. I’d love your services.” I told him that I can come back another time to set that up and he said “no, we can do it now.” I said okay. We then went through the process to get him scheduled directly after his neighbor. Halfway through the set up, though, the funeral home showed up, so I offered to help. Little did I know this would only intensify the situation and next thing you know I’m helping the man from the funeral home carry the wife of this man who I was selling out into the car.

So not every day is the same and some days are more interesting than others. And some days we get to help people in ways we didn’t expect.
