Pest Cartoons vs. Pest Reality

Many forms of entertainment, such as cartoons, literature, or illustrations, often portray inaccurate depictions of pests. These false characterizations of pests can be misleading when it comes to pest management and knowing the most efficient ways to treat certain insects or rodents in your area. In this article, we will discuss some common misconceptions about pests in the entertainment industry.

One of the most common misconceptions about pests in the entertainment world is that mice are attracted to cheese. When given the opportunity of free food, mice will always take it. However, cheese is not their preferred food source. Rodents are more likely to interact with a bait station when filled with items they love, such as grains, seeds, nuts, and other high-carbohydrate foods. They are also attracted to foods with strong smells like peanut butter or even bacon bits. When learning about rodent characteristics, we can learn how to better capture them and prevent them from entering our home again.

Another common misconception that is frequently displayed in cartoons is that pests are knowledgeable and can come up with plans to invade an area. While this is a fun idea, pests do not have human-like intelligence nor do they have the ability to collaborate with other bugs and carry out complex plans. In other forms of entertainment, pests, like rats or mice, are portrayed as heroic or sympathetic creatures. Some of these stories include Disney’s movie The Rescuers, The Tale of Desperaux, Stuart Little, Flushed Away, Ratatouille, and much more. While rodents can be kept as pets, they can also carry harmful diseases and can damage structures, food supplies, crops, and more – especially rodents that live in the wild and are not frequently groomed and clean.

Entertainment often exaggerates pests’ size and overall speed. While some pests move quickly, their speed is usually not as exaggerated as shown in cartoons. Most pests move at a slower pace when compared to humans, especially ground-bearing pests.  Entertainment can also exaggerate the overall appearance of a pest. For example, in some cartoons, cockroaches are portrayed as giant, strong creatures, even strong enough to withstand nuclear explosions. While cockroaches are larger in size and are incredibly strong for their size, they will never measure up to humans or other animals and will never survive a nuclear explosion.

An important misconception to know when it comes to managing pests is that cartoons often show pests dying immediately after a pesticide is used. In reality, the effects of pesticides take time and do not always lead to immediate elimination. When a pesticide is applied around the home, most insects identify the chemical and recognize that their home is under attack. Many homes experience a “flushing out” phase as these pests try to evacuate. Many times, it takes a few days for these chemicals to fully affect the insect and kill the pests inside the home.

When it comes to pest management, it is important to be knowledgeable about the pest you’re dealing with. The more you’re able to learn about the pests in your area, the better you will be able to treat them and prevent them from entering your home again.
