How to Keep My Pantry Pest-Free

How to Keep My Pantry Pest-Free

There are several reasons why pantries are one of the most common areas for pests to wander and hide. Pantries usually store a wide variety of food and spices, making them incredibly attractive to pests such as insects and rodents. Pests often prefer hiding in areas that are dark, warm, and less trafficked, making pantries the perfect environment for pest infestations.  In this article, we will discuss what you can do to prevent pests from finding food inside your pantry area.

The best thing you can do to keep your pantry clear from pests is to store food in airtight containers. Store foods such as flour, cereal, pasta, grains, and even pet food in containers made of glass, metal, or plastic. By doing so, pests such as rodents, ants, and moths, have a harder time smelling and accessing these strong attractants.

It is also important to keep your pantry regularly clean and organized. By cleaning up any crumbs or spills throughout the area and by regularly inspecting your pantry for any signs of pests, it will be harder for rodents and insects to find this area as a prime place to nest. One way you can organize your food is by placing the older products towards the front so that they are eaten first. This reduces the risk of food going bad and attracting pests at the same time.

Be vigilant in cleaning up after cooking, baking, or using the kitchen area with food. Pests are attracted to food residue, so keeping your kitchen area clean is vital to keeping pests away. This also includes trash. By regularly disposing of your trash, pests are more likely to leave your kitchen as their food source becomes limited and harder to access. Keep your outdoor trash away from potential entry points and consider using a lid that seals your trash rather than keeping it open.

Pests, like ants and cockroaches, are attracted to moist areas. Pantries can oftentimes get stuffy as their doors usually remain closed and easily collect warmer temperatures. If there are any leaky areas in the pantry or kitchen area, be sure to address these problem areas or consider using dehumidifiers to maintain a dry environment.

By following these pantry tips, you can reduce the risk of pests entering your home. Keeping a clean and organized home is one of the best pest management solutions.
