Carpet Beetles

Carpet Beetles are small invasive bugs that are a common household pest here in the Pacific Northwest. Carpet beetles usually have small bodies with various patterns of black, white, and brown scales on their back and are generally found outside. These beetles are known to fly, however, they are not strong fliers and are generally clumsy when compared to other flying insects. You may notice these bugs flying short distances to get from point A to point B. However, most adult beetles are often attracted to light and you may occasionally find them near windowsills or light fixtures. Most adult beetles spend the majority of their time outside, while the larvae move indoors and cause the most damage as they feed on various materials such as carpets and clothing. Larvae often feast on both animal-based products and plant-based materials, such as wool, fur, silk, cotton, synthetic fibers, and more.

The best way to know if you have carpet beetle larvae in your home is by damaged fabrics, shed skin, or adult carpet beetles coming in and out of the home. The best way to get rid of the larvae is by thoroughly cleaning your home. It is best to vacuum and clean your carpets where you suspect an infestation. If you are able to identify the source of the larvae, whether that’s in pet fur, wool products, or your carpet, you should discard the harboring area right away. If you suspect a larvae infestation, it is also important to wash and dry any linens or fabrics that may be affected in hot water and to dry the materials on high heat to kill any hidden eggs. By doing these three steps, you should be able to remove of the larvae in your home, assuming no other eggs have been laid.

There are certain precautions that every person can take within their home to prevent these bugs from entering. Regularly cleaning your home and paying close attention to baseboards, closets, and underneath furniture will help you see any signs of harboring larvae or adult carpet beetles. It is also important to thoroughly inspect any second-hand items you bring into your home. When bringing in new furniture or clothing, perform a careful inspection, looking for any signs of bugs. With clothing, it is advised to immediately put your clothing in the washer and dry on high heat. Another way you can prevent these bugs from entering your home is by keeping your home sealed at all times. In the summer months, people often keep their windows open. When doing so, ensure your screens are adequately sealed and that there are no potential entryways for bugs to enter your home.
