How To Avoid Pests This Holiday Season

The winter months are not kind to pests. Many homeowners see an increase in pests during the colder months since so many pests seek shelter indoors. Common pests seen inside during the winter season include silverfish, spiders, rodents, and boxelder bugs. With extra people in the homes during the holiday season, pests may be particularly attracted to your area as leftover food is left out and items for the outdoors are being brought in. Luckily, there are many things you can do to help prevent pests from entering your home this holiday season.

During Thanksgiving and Christmas time, many people bring in live evergreen greenery, whether it be a tree, wreath, or natural branches to decorate with. Some may even bring in wood to use for wood-burning stoves, fireplaces, or decoration. When bringing in greenery, it is important to perform a thorough inspection before bringing the item inside. With the colder temperatures, many insects use branches and tree trunks as places to find shelter and warmth. Bugs like spiders, moths, aphids, and beetles, will hide their eggs in evergreen trees. Look for signs of eggs or adult bugs before bringing your tree inside.

The holidays often bring extra-sugary treats and desserts. Just as much as we love these yummy treats, so do pests. It can be helpful to keep treats off the counters and stored properly. When leaving snacks and desserts out, make sure that they are tightly sealed in containers so that pests have a difficult time accessing them. It is also important to ensure that your kitchen area is kept clean. Leftover crumbs on countertops or floors attract pests like ants, rodents, cockroaches, and silverfish. By keeping your home clean and tidy, pests will not be as attracted to your home.

It can also be beneficial to regularly take your trash out of the house. Trashcans that do not have lids attached to them make them easy for pests to access. Keeping your home clean of trash can help keep pests away as food does not linger and smell.

Storing your decorations can also be an important part of keeping pests away from your home. Most pests prefer places that are not frequently visited. Holiday decorations make a great place for pests to hide as these boxes generally make a dark and cozy environment for rodents and bugs. When unpacking your decorations, be mindful of what’s inside your storage bins and boxes. It can also be helpful to ensure that your boxes and bins are tightly sealed when putting decorations away. This will eliminate any entry points for pests to enter.
