How to Prevent Fleas

fleas in dog hair

When it gets warm outside, it’s easier for your pets to carry in fleas with them or other pests. Here are some tips on how to prevent fleas, so you don’t have to worry about these pests this summer.

Keep yard flea free

The number one thing you should start with when actively defending your home from fleas is making sure the fleas do not set up camp on your property outside. To keep these pests away, you want to keep your grass mowed and shrubs trimmed back to make sure they don’t have places to hide. Don’t invite other feral animals to come on your property by leaving food bowls from pets outside.

Use spot-on treatments

Prevention is a very active lifestyle, so it is important to practice it every day. When pets come indoors from playing or just being outside, it is smart to run a comb or brush through their hair to reduce the number of pests their hair might carry. If you have a long-haired pet, you might want to consider getting their hair trimmed.

Keep home clean

If you have fleas in your home, it doesn’t necessarily mean your home is dirty. However, if you pay attention to certain areas, you might be able to prevent these pests. Larvae usually lives in carpeting or throw rugs, so vacuuming at least once a week can help keep these pests away.

Use the correct flea prevention

It is important to make sure you are using the right flea prevention for the correct pet. Using flea prevention for cats on dogs and vice versa could be life threatening. Make sure you are buying the correct product for the pet you are buying for by researching products and checking labels.
