What Is Silverfish?

Silverfish are small, wingless insects that have a metallic appearance. They have an oblong body with three long filaments, or strands, on the end of their abdomen. Their antennae are straight and threadlike, with mouthparts for chewing. Silverfish have large compound eyes that take up most of their headspace, so they can’t see very well. They’re about 1/2 inch long but just 1/8 inch wide.

These wingless insects have three life stages: egg, nymph, and adult. Female silverfish will lay eggs in cracks in walls near sources of moisture like showers and sinks.

Silverfish are nocturnal insects that tend to be more common in warm climates. They thrive in warm, damp environments, and are able to reproduce very quickly by laying just under 100 eggs throughout their lifetime. It is difficult to know how long silverfish live for due to a lack of research on the species, but it has been estimated that silverfish can live anywhere from a few months up to three years.

Silverfish In House

Although silverfish aren’t dangerous to humans, they can contaminate food sources and surfaces with their feces and urine. That being said, they do not carry any diseases, sting or bite. They don’t even have mouths! The problem with silverfish infestations is that they can cause a lot of damage to books, food, clothing, and different types of fabrics. Their presence is still both annoying and disruptive. No one wants them crawling around in their home. Even just the idea of a silverfish infestation sends a chill down your spine.

You know you have a silverfish infestation if you notice their feces (which look like tiny black pepper-like pellets) around your home. Or when you see the damage they have left in books, food, and clothing. Silverfish are nocturnal so they will be active at night when it’s dark out. They can fit into very tiny cracks and crevices around window sills, molding, baseboards, and between floor tiles so don’t think just because you can’t see them that they aren’t there!

How To Get Rid Of Silverfish

Silverfish may be linked to excess moisture indoors, so try reducing humidity levels by using dehumidifiers or make sure your home has proper ventilation. However, in cases where there is a large amount of silverfish in your home, you will want to contact a professional at Insight Pest Solutions for proper silverfish treatments and silverfish removal.

It’s important to make sure that food sources are kept sealed, especially pet food. Silverfish are attracted to both sugary and fatty foods, so be sure that all pantries are tightly closed. If silverfish do get into any packages of flour or cereal, throw the items away immediately. It’s also helpful to investigate where silverfish might be getting inside your home by checking closets for leaks and cracks under sinks which will lead them indoors.
