So, you have ants. You may be wondering how you got them in the first place. More importantly, you want to know how to get rid of ants. We have you covered!
Odorous House Ants (often known as sugar ants) are a social insect. Each colony has multiple queens and can have thousands of workers. The majority of the ants that you see in the kitchen, bathroom, living room, and so on are most likely just the workers sent to forage for food. All it takes is one worker finding a crumb under the cabinet, and then they will go back to the colony and bring other workers. Then you have a trail of ants coming from the colony to the inside of your home.
Odorous House Ants (OHA) are not picky when it comes to a food source. OHA’s love sweet food and liquid items and good protein sources such as fruit juice or cat food for example. When one of the queens sends out workers looking for food, they will scatter out alone looking for that crumb you, your kids, or pet has left anywhere in your home. When an ant comes across that crumb that was missed, it will pick it up or a piece of it and start back to the colony. On the way back, it is leaving a pheromone behind it showing other ants where to go and get food for the colony. When that worker gets back to the nest, it will give what it found to the queens, and the queens will tell other works to go back and get more.
That is when you might start to notice the ant trail coming from some crack, window, cabinet, or electrical outlet. Your first thought is to get out that can of bug killer from under the sink and spray them. This will kill the workers that are right there at that moment. Most bug killer that you can get at the big box stores will not have any residual chemical to kill the other ants as they come from the nest. Then without warning, you wake up one morning a few days or weeks later, and there are ants all over your counter.
What has happened is the queens realized that the workers they sent out did not come back. The queens then go into a mass reproduction to make up for the casualties that they took. Now that the population is on the way up, the workers need to go back out and look for food again. They remember that your counter had an excellent food source. So, what do you do? You go back to that same can of bug killer, and the cycle starts over again.
I see this time and time again. I have many customers call up saying they have been dealing with ants for months or years and nothing they have done ever works. They have tried box store exterior sprays, instant bug killers, and bait trays and yet none of it worked for long. Why would hiring Insight Pest Control be any different? We have the experience, knowledge, and products to treat for the pest effectively.
Our techs (not kidding here) enjoy taking their time and looking for the ant trail. It’s like an investigation into how these ants are getting in the home. If necessary, our techs will follow one ant around until they can tell where the main trail is. They then place our specially developed bait on the path far away from the food source that the ants had initially been going after. The ants are now not only collecting food to poison the queen, but they are also moving further away from the problem areas.
